For reasons unknown to myself, i found myself listening to AM radio on the way home from work the other night. I’m not sure of the station exactly, it could’ve been 87.4 but yeh i don’t know for sure.

From my previous experiences, talkback AM radio is where right wing, conservatives go to share their uneducated, usually racist views and just generally show the rest of society that ‘Yes, we’re bigots, and you should hear what we have to say’.

The topic of discussion was gay marriage. Something that the bigots and I share in this respect is that we both feel pretty strongly about it. Unfortunately for them they don’t share the same view as me.

Most of their arguments consisted around citing bible verses (!) and spouting off the same ‘They don’t respect the sanctity of marriage’ lines. Ironically most of the callers would make all these claims and then say something about how much they respect marriage, but that they themselves were divorced. 1 in 2 marriages end in divorce so this isn’t surprising to hear, but really I’m not that concerned that the divorce rates are high, as Axl Rose said before he became the epitome of the death of music “nothing lasts forever and we both know hearts can change”.

With divorce rates so high, it seems apparent that maybe the union of a man and a woman isn’t respected either. Maybe the idea of being linked ‘under god’ to someone for the rest of your life doesn’t garner respect, but thats probably an argument for another post.

I don’t think that the people that were ringing up to voice their opinions, nor anyone for that matter is in a position to say that gay people don’t respect marriage, and that they would ruin the union. For me it would be logical to assume that because gay people have had to work for it, and not just move from marriage to marriage knowing that if it doesn’t work out they can always divorce, that they would probably respect it a whole lot more, and maybe it’s the heterosexual that don’t respect marriage. It’s apparent that we don’t respect marriage enough to let anyone that wants to enjoy it do so.
